Privacy Policy
Last updated: 9 October 2026
This policy explains what personal information Partial Platforms Inc. ("Partial", "we", "us") collects through the Partial dating app, why, who we share it with, where it is kept, how long we keep it, and your rights.
Partial is offered only in Canada and only to adults aged 18 or over. This policy is written to comply with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), Quebec's Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector, and the Personal Information Protection Acts of British Columbia and Alberta.
The person in charge of the protection of personal information is our Privacy Officer, reachable at admin@partial.chat (section 10).
1. What we collect and why
Information you give us
| Information | Why we use it |
|---|---|
| Email address or phone number (not collected if you sign up with a passkey) | To create your account, sign you in and send one-time codes |
| Password (optional) | To sign you in. Stored only as a bcrypt hash |
| Passkey: the public key, a key identifier, a random account handle, the device model, and when it was created and last used | To sign you in. The private key never leaves your device |
| Date of birth | To confirm you are 18 or over |
| Display name, bio and photos | Shown on your profile. Photo metadata, including camera location, is removed on upload |
| A video selfie, once, and what is derived from it | The identity check (see Identity check below) |
| Gender identity, and who you are interested in | Matching. Both are shown on your profile — you confirm that when you answer them, with a box you tick before continuing |
| Optional details (currently pronouns, languages, ethnicity, height, education, star sign, disability, what you are looking for, relationship style, when you would like to marry and to have children, whether you have children, pets, religion and how religious you are, political leaning, fitness, diet, drinking, smoking, cannabis and drugs) | Shown on your profile — everything you answer is. Other members can filter by them, except pronouns; some filters need Partial+. A filter on disability can only find people who list one and can never be used to hide anyone. Answering No to drinking, cannabis and drugs shows you as Fully sober, which members can filter by |
| Filter presets, if you have Partial+ | Saved sets of your filters, so you can switch between them. Only you see them. You are shown to the people any of them would show you, as well as to those your main filters would |
| Your home location and search area | Deciding who you see and who sees you (see Location below) |
| Opinions, votes, messages, reactions, reports and blocks | Running the feed, matching, conversations and moderation |
| A thumbs up or thumbs down on an opinion chat you are not in | Deciding the order opinion chats are shown in. It is never shown to anybody else, including the chat's members |
| Friend invite codes, friends, group chats and wingman arrangements | Running those features (see Other members below) |
| If you buy Partial+: the App Store's or Google Play's record of the purchase — the plan, and when it was bought, renewed, refunded or ends — and a random code that ties it to your account | Giving you Partial+, renewing it and handling refunds. Apple or Google takes the payment; we never receive your card or bank details |
| Which version of Partial you use — the full app or Wingman only — and every switch between them, with its date and time | Running the version you chose, your Partial timeline, and understanding how Partial is used (see Wingman only and the Partial timeline below) |
Information we collect automatically
| Information | Why we use it |
|---|---|
| Swipes, matches, read receipts and typing indicators | Running the Service. Typing indicators are shown to the other people in the conversation, and read receipts too, except in a conversation with a match, where they start off. You can change either (see Other members below) |
| Which opinions you have been shown | Not showing you the same opinion twice |
| Usage statistics: when you open the app and roughly how long you use it, stored as daily counts against your account; which main screens you open and whether you voted on an opinion you were shown, counted without identifying you | Understanding how Partial is used and fixing problems |
| When you last used Partial, to within about 15 minutes | Showing on your profile roughly how long you have been away, once it is more than a week; and showing your profile less often in Discover after a week away, and not at all after three weeks, until you come back |
| Push notification token | Sending you notifications |
| The language your app uses (English or French) | Writing notifications, emails and other messages from us to you in that language |
| IP address and connection data | Security, abuse prevention and fixing faults |
| A device check at sign-up (see Signing up below) | Keeping automated sign-ups out, and enforcing a moderator's bar on a device |
| Device information and, on Android or on an iPhone where you allow tracking, the advertising identifier, collected by Google's ad software | Serving and measuring ads (see Advertising below) |
We do not read your contacts or track your location in the background. On iPhone, Google's ad software receives the advertising identifier only if you allow tracking when the app asks (see Advertising).
We also use what you do on Partial to improve it. Your swipes, votes and matches, the opinions you were shown, how you use the app, and reports and our decisions about them are used to understand how Partial is used, and to build and train the systems — including machine-learning models — that decide what to show you and help us find abuse. Section 6 says how long each is kept.
Signing up
You agree to this policy and the Terms of Service on the first screen, before we collect anything.
Date of birth. We then ask your date of birth, before any other information. If you are under 18, no account is created and we keep nothing about you.
Device check. We ask Apple DeviceCheck (iPhone) or Google Play Integrity (Android) whether your device is genuine and running the app we published. What is sent is a one-time token, and on Android a hashed device identifier; no name, email address or account is sent. A device that fails is refused an account.
A barred device. If a moderator reviews an account and concludes its owner is under 18, they delete the account and bar the device. On iPhone, Apple records the bar and we store nothing. On Android, we store a hash of the device identifier and the date of the bar, and nothing else. A bar has no expiry. Nothing automatic bars a device.
Signing in
- Apple or Google. We receive an identifier from the provider and, if the provider has verified it, your email address. We do not receive your password.
- One-time codes are sent by SMS or email through the providers in section 4.
- Passkeys are created and kept by your device's password manager (iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager) and may be synced to your Apple or Google account under their terms. If your account has no email address or phone number and you lose every device holding the passkey, we cannot recover the account.
- Face ID, Touch ID and fingerprint unlock happen on your device. We are told only whether the check passed. This is not the identity check.
Identity check
Everyone is verified once, and Partial cannot be used until then. Most people do it with the identity check below, which stops people building profiles from other people's photos; if you cannot, a person can verify you another way.
- How it works. You record a short video selfie while the screen flashes colours. Your device streams it directly to Amazon Web Services (AWS) Rekognition. The video never reaches our servers and is not stored. AWS returns a result and one still image.
- What we keep. The still image is converted into a face vector (numbers describing your face) and then discarded. No image of your face is stored. The face vector is stored in our private AWS collection for as long as your account exists.
- What the check and the face vector are used for. Only to: confirm a live person is present; check that the photos you add contain your face; check that your face is not already enrolled on another account; and estimate your age.
- Consent. The face vector is biometric information. We ask for your express consent on the identity check screen before the check starts. You can decline: an account that has not completed the check can only sign in, manage its sign-in methods and delete itself.
- If you cannot do the check (for example because of a disability), email admin@partial.chat and a person at Partial will work out another way to verify you, with you. What you send us for this is used only to verify you.
- Photos. A photo that contains a face must contain yours. At least three photos on your profile must be ones the check found you in. Wingman only asks instead for one profile picture, which does not have to show your face.
- Duplicate accounts. If your face is already enrolled on another account, the new account is refused automatically. The app then tells you how that other account signs in — the method only, with its email address or phone number partly hidden (for example m•••@g•••.com) — and can send a sign-in code to that account's own email address or phone number, so that its owner can get back into it. The full address or number is never shown.
- Age estimate. The check also estimates the range of ages you appear to be, and we store that range with your identity check record. If the estimate suggests you may be under 18, a moderator may review your account. If it is low enough, your account is held until a person has reviewed it. While held, you can sign out or delete your account. On a held account we also store a device reference (the same hashed identifier or Apple token described above), so that a moderator can bar the device if they conclude its owner is under 18.
Location
- Your home is the place you choose to be shown in. We store its coordinates, rounded to within 80 metres, and its city and neighbourhood names. We do not store the street name or house number. The coordinates decide whose searches you appear in. Other members see a place name no finer than your neighbourhood — your neighbourhood or your city, and nothing more precise than either (or the province, if the place is in no city). Partial shows your city, and your neighbourhood beside it only if you turn on Show my neighbourhood.
- Your search area is a point and a radius that decides whose profiles you see. It is not shown to other members, except that your wingman sees its radius. When you move it, we look up a name for its centre to show you on your filters; that name is not shown to anyone else either.
- Device location is read only when you tap use my current location, once, while you are using the app, and never in the background. We ask for precise location; you can choose approximate location in your device settings, or type an address instead.
- Partial never shows anyone how far away you are.
Other members
There is no member search.
- Your profile. Members who can see your profile see your display name, photos, bio, gender identity, who you are interested in, city or neighbourhood, optional details, the opinions you post, how you voted on opinions, and — once you have been away for more than a week — roughly how many weeks it has been. The exact time you last used Partial is never shown.
- Friends. Redeeming a friend's invite code shows your display name and photo to the code's owner as a request. A friend can message you, see your votes on opinions they have also voted on, and add you to a group chat.
- Group chats. A friend can add you to a group of up to 6 people without asking you first. Members can see your display name, photo and messages. You can leave at any time.
- Opinion chats. You join only by asking, or by accepting an invitation. Members can see your display name, photo and messages. An opinion chat you are in is listed on your profile only if you choose to list it: you are asked when you create or join one, and you can change that default, or take a chat off your profile, at any time.
- Reactions. You can react with one emoji to a message in any conversation you are in, and in a public opinion chat you are only reading. Anybody who can read the message can see who reacted, with each person's display name and photo, so a reaction you leave in a public chat shows your name and photo beside it to anyone reading that chat. If you are reading a public chat without being in it, Partial tells you this before your first reaction. Members you have blocked, or who have blocked you, never see your reactions.
- Shared opinions. Voting on an opinion shared into a conversation shows your vote to the people in that conversation.
- Read receipts and typing. The people in a conversation see when you are typing and when you have read their messages, except in a conversation with a match: there, read receipts start off, and you each see the other's only once you have both turned them on. You choose each one separately for conversations with matches, conversations with friends and opinion chats in Settings → Chat privacy → Read receipts & typing, or for one conversation from its menu. Turning one off also means you no longer see it from others in the conversations where it is off.
- Wingmen. A friend you accept as your wingman sees the profiles Partial shows you and who you are interested in. They see how you swiped on those profiles only if you turn on Settings → Wingman → Wingmen can see my swipes, which is off by default. They also see your search radius and start from a copy of your filters. They cannot see your matches, match requests, conversations, notifications or blocks, and they cannot act for you. Either of you can end it at any time. If you are a friend's wingman, that friend sees how you swiped on the profiles you were shown for them.
Wingman only and the Partial timeline
Wingman only is a version of Partial with no dating profile, for helping your friends. You choose it after the identity check, or switch to it with Settings → Deactivate my account, and you return to the full app with Settings → Enable full app.
- Who sees you. To members who are not your friends, a Wingman-only account is a deactivated account: you are not shown in Discover, nobody but your friends can open your profile, and your matches and the members of opinion chats you are in see you as "Deactivated User". Your friends still see your profile, display name and picture, and can message you, add you to group chats and see your votes, as before.
- Your wingmen. Switching to Wingman only ends the arrangements in which friends are your wingmen. The ones in which you are a friend's wingman continue.
- Partial timeline. While it is on, the app shows you when you turned it on, which version of Partial you were using then, and every switch since, with its date and time, so that you can show someone how you have used Partial. Only you see it in the app. It is on by default. Turning it off clears it, and turning it on again starts a new one from that moment, showing its new start date.
- What we keep. We record every switch between the two versions, with its date and time, whether or not your Partial timeline is on. We keep that record for as long as your account exists, to run your timeline and to understand how Partial is used, and it is deleted with your account.
Language and translation
When you post an opinion, a message, a bio, a chat title or a note with a request to join a chat, our servers detect the language it is written in and store it with the text. This is done on our own servers; the text is not sent to anyone else to be classified. The app uses it to offer a translation to members who use Partial in another language.
Translation happens on the reader's device, with Google ML Kit on Android and Apple's Translation framework on iPhone. What you write is not sent to Google, Apple or anyone else to be translated; the device downloads its translation models from Google or Apple. If no language is stored for a piece of content, the reader's device detects it. You choose whether other people's content is translated for you under Settings → Display → Translate other people.
Advertising
Partial is free and paid for by ads served by Google AdMob in the opinions and discovery feeds. Google's ad software in the app receives device information, such as device type, operating system, language and approximate location based on IP address, and on Android the advertising identifier. Google uses it to serve and measure ads under its own privacy policy. On iPhone, the app asks you once, before the first ad, whether to allow tracking; only if you allow it does Google's ad software receive the advertising identifier, which it may use to show ads more relevant to you. You can change your answer at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
The ads in Partial are not personalised: every request asks Google for a non-personalised ad, which is chosen from things like the app and the approximate location rather than from a profile of you.
We do not give your personal information to advertisers, use it to target ads, or sell it. Partial+ members see no ads; otherwise you cannot turn them off. You can limit use of advertising identifiers in your device settings.
2. Consent
We rely on your consent, which you give on the first screen of the app before we collect anything. For sensitive information:
- Face vector: express consent on the identity check screen. The check is a condition of using Partial.
- Gender identity and who you are interested in: required for matching, and both are shown on your profile. You confirm that with a box you tick before continuing. You can change them at any time.
- Religion: optional. The screen tells you that an answer appears on your profile and lets other members filter by it. You can clear it at any time.
- Ethnicity: optional, and you can pick more than one. The screen tells you that an answer appears on your profile and lets other members filter by it. You can clear it at any time.
- Disability, political leaning, and drinking, cannabis and drugs: optional. The screen tells you that every answer appears on your profile and that other members can filter by it, and shows you every filter there is before you answer. A disability can only be used to find people who list one, never to hide anyone. You can clear any answer at any time.
You can withdraw your consent by deleting your account (section 6). Deactivating your account is not a withdrawal of consent. Some records are kept after deletion, as described in section 6.
We do not send marketing messages.
3. Automated decisions and moderation
We screen content automatically. Photos are checked by an automated image classifier and compared with your other photos to prevent duplicates. Text in opinions, profiles and messages is checked for content our Terms of Service prohibit. Content may be refused, or published and referred to a person. Reports are reviewed by a person.
These decisions are made by automated processing alone:
- refusing sign-up for a date of birth under 18;
- refusing sign-up for a device that fails the device check;
- refusing an account whose face is already enrolled on another account;
- keeping an account out of Partial until setup is complete (identity check, three photos of you, display name, gender answers and home; for Wingman only, the identity check, a display name and one picture);
- refusing a photo or text that screening finds prohibited, a photo whose faces are not yours, or a copy of a photo already on your profile.
The age estimate only selects accounts for review by a person. A person makes every decision to delete an account for being under 18.
You can ask for any of these decisions to be reviewed by a person, and submit your observations, by writing to admin@partial.chat. If you are in Quebec, you can also ask which personal information was used to make the decision, the main reasons and factors behind it, and to have that information corrected.
4. Who we share it with
We share personal information only with service providers that run parts of Partial for us, and only as they need it:
| Provider | Purpose | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud Platform | Hosting and database | Toronto, Canada |
| Cloudflare (R2) | Photo storage and delivery | United States |
| Google Cloud Vision | Photo screening | United States |
| Amazon Web Services (Rekognition) | Identity check, face vector storage, photo face checks and age estimate | United States |
| Google AdMob | Ads | United States and elsewhere |
| Google Maps Platform | Turning an address or map point into coordinates and a place name | United States and elsewhere |
| Google Maps (Android) and Apple MapKit (iPhone) | Showing the map on the location screen | United States and elsewhere |
| Apple (Push Notifications, DeviceCheck) | Notifications and device check on iPhone | United States |
| Google (Firebase Cloud Messaging, Play Integrity) | Notifications and device check on Android | United States |
| Twilio and Twilio SendGrid | Sending one-time codes by SMS and email; email alerts to our moderators | United States |
| Slack | Alerts to our moderators (identifiers and report category only) | United States |
| Apple (App Store) and Google (Google Play) | Taking payment for Partial+, and telling us about renewals and refunds | United States |
Notifications can show personal information on your lock screen: a message notification shows the sender's name, photo and message text, and most other notifications name the person they are about. You can hide notification content in your device settings or turn notifications off under Settings → Notification settings.
We may also disclose personal information where the law requires it, or where necessary to prevent serious harm to a person. If Partial is involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, personal information may be transferred as part of it, as the law permits.
5. Where it is stored
Your account, profile, messages and opinions are stored in Toronto, Canada. Your photos are stored with Cloudflare in the United States, in private storage, and shown only through temporary links.
Personal information is transferred outside Quebec, including to Toronto, and outside Canada to the providers in section 4, most of them in the United States. Your photos are stored in the United States until you remove them or delete your account, and your face vector for as long as your account exists. Information held outside Canada is subject to the laws of that country and may be accessed by its courts and authorities.
6. Keeping and deleting your information
Deactivating (Settings → Deactivate my account) switches your account to Wingman only (see Wingman only and the Partial timeline in section 1): members who are not your friends no longer see you. Nothing is deleted, and you can return to the full app with Settings → Enable full app.
Deleting (Settings → Delete my account, or date.partial.chat/docs/delete-account) is immediate and permanent. It works whether or not you have finished setting up your account. Deleting your account does not cancel a Partial+ subscription: cancel it in your App Store or Google Play settings.
Deleted with your account
Your account and sign-in methods; your profile, photos, date of birth, gender answers and optional details; your face vector (from AWS and from our database), your identity check records, age estimate and any stored device reference; your home and search area; your swipes, matches, friends, invite codes and wingman arrangements, and the swipes your wingmen cast for you; your Partial timeline and the record of switches between Wingman only and the full app; your conversation memberships, reactions to messages, notifications, settings, blocks, reports you filed, usage statistics and your Partial+ purchase records. A passkey stops working but stays on your device until you remove it. Deleted information stays in our backups for up to 14 days before it is overwritten.
Kept after deletion
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Opinions you posted, votes on them, your votes on other opinions, and their change history | They are part of results other members have seen |
| Messages you sent, and conversations | They are also the other members' records |
| Opinion chats you hosted | Other members still use them |
| Swipes you cast as a friend's wingman | They were cast for your friend, whose Wingman tab is built from them |
| Thumbs up or down you gave opinion chats | They are part of how those chats are ordered for other members |
| Reports filed about you, and our moderation decisions | So a removed member cannot erase the record by re-registering |
These are no longer linked to your name, email address or phone number, and are shown as belonging to a deleted user. Apart from moderation records (below), they have no fixed retention period. To ask us to remove them, write to our Privacy Officer.
Retention periods
- Your history on Partial — your swipes and wingman swipes and every change to them, your votes and their history, your match, friend and wingman history, the opinions you were shown, your notifications, your past homes, your friend invite codes, the switches between Wingman only and the full app, and your usage statistics — is kept for as long as your account exists, and deleted with it (apart from what Kept after deletion lists). We keep it to improve Partial, as section 1 describes.
- Moderation records are kept for as long as the account they are about exists. If it no longer exists, including because its owner deleted it, they are kept with no expiry, and 400 days after each decision the reporter's identity and description are erased.
- A barred device is kept with no expiry, so that the bar survives reinstalling the app.
- Signing in: a one-time code lasts 10 minutes, a passkey sign-in challenge 5 minutes, and a saved sign-in 30 days without use. A friend invite code stops working after 48 hours.
- Server and security logs: 30 days.
- Everything else is kept while your account exists, or longer where the law requires it or a legal claim needs it.
7. Security
Traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted, passwords are stored only as bcrypt hashes, message text is encrypted when it is stored, your sign-in credential is kept in your device's secure storage, and access to our systems is restricted. If a breach creates a real risk of significant harm, we will notify you and the regulators as the law requires.
8. Technology that identifies, locates or profiles you
- Identity check (identifies you by your face, and estimates your age): required to use Partial, unless a person verifies you another way (section 1).
- Device location: off until you tap use my current location, and subject to your device's location permission.
- Matching uses your home, search area and gender answers: required to use discovery.
- Usage statistics: collected while you use the app.
- Language detection: the language of what you write is detected when you post it, so that it can be translated for other members.
- Advertising: on Android, Google's ad software may use the advertising identifier to choose ads. You can reset or delete the identifier in your device settings. On iPhone it may do so only if you allow tracking when the app asks, and you can withdraw that in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
9. Your rights
You can view and change most of your information in the app, under your profile and Settings, and delete your account at any time.
You also have the right to access the personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected, to withdraw your consent, and to complain about how we handle it. If you are in Quebec, you can also ask for a copy in a structured, commonly used technological format, and ask us to stop disseminating your information where the law gives that right.
Write to our Privacy Officer (section 10). We respond within 30 days and may need to verify your identity first.
You can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (priv.gc.ca), the Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec, or the Information and Privacy Commissioner of British Columbia or Alberta.
10. Contact
Privacy Officer (person in charge of the protection of personal information), Partial Platforms Inc.
- Mailing address: 1025 King St E, Unit 107 #1768, Cambridge, ON N3H 3P5
- Email: admin@partial.chat
11. Children
Partial is only for people 18 or over. We ask your date of birth before creating an account and refuse anyone under 18, keeping nothing about them. The identity check's age estimate is used to find accounts that may belong to someone under 18, and a moderator deletes any account they conclude belongs to a child. If you believe someone under 18 is using Partial, report them in the app or email admin@partial.chat.
12. Changes
We may update this policy. We will notify you in the app or by email before a material change takes effect, and update the date at the top.
